New trailers: Beauty and the Beast, The Handmaid’s Tale, and more

I’m honestly one of those people who enjoys Super Bowl commercials more than the actual Super Bowl. They’re not all amazing, but it really is the one time of year where commercials get elevated into something more interesting, where they’re not intent on getting to the brand slogan and sales pitch as quickly as possible and are willing to try showing you a sweet or funny or otherwise engaging story for a change.

The problem for people like me is that, depending on the group of people you’re watching the game with, you can find your watching habits completely out of sync. I don’t care about the game, but I do want to pay attention during the breaks. While for most people, the commercials are still the thing to ignore. Fortunately, they all end up online now, so I’m covered either way.

Check out nine trailers from this week below.

Beauty and the Beast

This final trailer for Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast is pretty much a tour straight through the movie — but here, where you probably already know the story, it actually works pretty well. Rather than being all dark and gloomy like the other trailers, this one opens up and has a little fun, showing bright colors, familiar songs, and some good moments with Gaston. It comes out March 17th.

The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale looks gorgeous, tense, and deeply creepy – and it’s definitely the most exciting series to come to Hulu yet. This 30-second spot is going to play during this Super Bowl this weekend, which, by the way, might be a good time to bug someone for their account password. The show premieres April 26th.

Imperial Dreams

Imperial Dreams sat around for a while after premiering at Sundance back in 2014, but it’s now found distribution through Netflix. The delay doesn’t bode particularly well for the film, but it’s easy to see why there’s suddenly interest: its lead actor is Star Wars star John Boyega. The film came out Friday, so you can go stream it right now.

Kiki

This documentary takes a look at the modern incarnation of the LGBTQ dance culture famously profiled in Paris is Burning. Kiki looks all at once like a joyous celebration of an oppressed culture and an honest discussion of the many challenges still forced upon the LGBTQ community. It comes out February 24th.

The Blackcoat’s Daughter

A girl’s boarding school. Demonic possession. Creepy religious figures. Yeah, it’s a formula, but it looks like The Blackcoat’s Daughter is doing an excellent job with it. This first trailer is exceptionally eerie… enough so that it probably didn’t need the wet stabbing sound effects at the end, but hey, they work. The film comes out May 13th.

Personal Shopper

I really love the look of this. While the name won’t exactly tip you off, Personal Shopper is a ghost story that looks surprisingly tense and scary but also intimate and emotional at the same time. Kristen Stewart stars. It comes out March 10th.

Catfight

Fortunately, Catfight doesn’t look anything like its name would suggest. The film is about an absurd, endless battle between a pair of women that involves brutal beatings, destroying lives, and inducing comas. The comedy got some good reviews out of its screenings at TIFF last year, and now it’s headed to theaters on March 3rd.

Bokeh

Bokeh is a low-budget sci-fi film that actually turned to Kickstarter in 2015 for funds to help it finish up production and special effects. The film is now just about ready for release, and it looks like it could be a good take on the ‘last person on Earth’ / end times story. It comes out March 24th.

Contemporary Color

This is technically a concert film, but it doesn’t look all that much like one. Contemporary Color documents an event put together by David Byrne that that paired 10 artists with color guard teams to create some very cool performances. Artists include St. Vincent, Nelly Furtado, and Ira Glass, among some other big names. It comes out March 1st.
