Tina Fey, Jon Hamm, and more will host an ACLU fundraiser on Facebook Live

Tom Hanks, Tiny Fey, Amy Poehler, Uzo Aduba, and a bunch of other celebrities will be hosting an ACLU fundraiser on Facebook Live at the end of this month. The telethon, called Stand for Rights: A Benefit for the ACLU, will be broadcast live from New York City on March 31st, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“It promises to be a historic event marking the first time in history people have something productive to do on Facebook on a Friday night,” reads a description on the event’s Facebook page. “Please tune in between stalking your ex and realizing that guy from high school who wore shorts in the winter is now a professional body-builder.”

It’s not clear what the team of celebrities — which also includes Jon Hamm, Alec Baldwin, and Tracy Morgan — will actually do during the Facebook Live, but the event page promises they will “entertain” rather than “speak earnestly about politics.”

While the word “telethon” might conjure images of radio station tote bags and a PBS box set of classical music, a Facebook Live telethon makes a lot of sense. People are more likely to be on Facebook on March 31st than they are to be tuned into a specific television station, and users can save or RSVP to the event so that Facebook will send a reminder when it starts.

This isn’t the first time Facebook Live has been the platform of choice for a telethon. In fact, a similar star-packed benefit for the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and Earthjustice took place on Inauguration Day this year. That event, which drew 1.3 million viewers, ultimately raised more than $200,000.

This month’s live stream will be broadcast on the Stand for Rights 2017 Facebook page, Funny or Die and The Huffington Post, according to THR. The telethon will run from 7PM to 11PM ET.
