An upcoming X-Files audiobook reunites David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, and more

The cult classic TV series The X-Files will continue to extend its lifespan with a new audiobook. Audible announced today that it will release The X-Files: Cold Cases on July 18th, with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprising their roles on the show by reading their lines in the audio version. The book is based on Joe Harris’ graphic novels.

Cold Cases takes place after the 2008 film The X-Files: I Want to Believe and acts as a backstory fill-in for the 2016 TV miniseries revival. After a data breach at FBI headquarters, unknown forces start digging into The X-Files’ unsolved investigations, otherwise known as cold cases. “As friends and foes of the agency long thought gone begin to inexplicably reappear, former agents Mulder and Scully come out of anonymity to face a growing conspiracy that involves not only their former department but the US government and forces not of this world,” the book’s description reads.

The original X-Files, which launched in 1993, followed Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as they investigated unsolved cases rooted in the paranormal. The X-Files: Cold Cases will feature other actors from the show reprising their roles, including Mitch Pileggi (Walter Skinner), William B. Davis (the Cigarette Smoking Man), and conspiracy theorist trio Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood (the Lone Gunmen).

The book follows a long tradition of Mulder and Scully-starring films and books of the audio, comic, and novel variety. Few things beat the sweet, sweet sounds of Duchovny and Anderson’s in-character flirting, but there’s a real dark horse in this race: Audible promises a soundscape full of “liquefying aliens, hissing creatures, and humming spacecraft,” to really lock in the experience.
