Time-traveling teen drama Life is Strange is getting a live-action spinoff

For anyone who has played Life is Strange, the game’s television influences are clear. It’s like a mash-up of Twin Peaks, Veronica Mars, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but with time travel. And now it will be getting a live-action series of its very own: publisher Square Enix has partnered with Legendary and DJ2 Entertainment to create a digital series based on the first season of the game.

Life is Strange follows the story of Max, a young photographer with the ability to rewind time. It puts choice at the forefront of the experience, letting you shape the narrative through decisions. Obviously a live-action series won’t have that same focus on decision making, but it sounds like the new show will stick relatively closely to the game. Square Enix’s Jon Brooke says that the live-action series will feature “a new version of Arcadia Bay and Blackwell Academy complete with our rich cast of realistic, believable characters and memorable events.” Developer Dontnod, meanwhile, says that it believes “that Life Is Strange lends itself perfectly to live-action imaginings.”

It’s still fairly early for the project — no cast, director, or date have been revealed — and Legendary says that it is “currently meeting with potential writers for the series adaptation.” In the meantime, if you haven’t played Life is Strange yet, now is a great time to start: the first episode was recently made completely free to play.
