Acer announces the thinnest and fattest laptops in the world

Acer definitely has the range. This morning at IFA, the company announced what are most likely the thinnest and fattest laptops in the world. At one end of the spectrum we have the Swift 7, the first laptop slimmer than a centimeter, and at the other, the Predator 21 X, a gaming behemoth that’s roughly ten times as thick.

Looking at the pair of these is like seeing a Chihuahua and a Great Dane in the same room together. It’s tough to remember that they both belong to the same species, and are meant for (broadly) similar work. Although, just like a Great Dane, we wouldn’t recommend keeping a Predator 21 X on your lap for too long.

The Swift 7 is definitely the more practical of the two machines. At 9.98 millimeters it only just squeezes under the 1 centimeter mark, but manages to offer a 13-inch Full HD display, a 7th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of SSD storage. It’s thin, yes, and record-breaking — but it’s also a perfectly sensible laptop.

The Predator 21 X, on the other hand, is a bit more unusual. It’s a massive gaming machine, and the first laptop to come with a curved display. In terms of specs, it’s pretty superlative, with room for up to 64GB of RAM, 4 terabytes of SSD storage, and a pair of GTX 1080 GPUs — all kept at a workable temperature by five (count ’em) five cooling fans. At eight kilograms it weighs seven times more than the Swift 7, and is probably around as many times as thick.

Out of the two machines, Acer will definitely be selling more of the Swift 7 — not least because the Predator 21 X isn’t going to be on general sale; you’ll have custom order one, and it’ll likely cost thousands of dollars. For true laptop connoisseurs though, we recommend buying both machines. That way you can just look from one to the other in mild shock, while making vague, burbling noises.
