Another world from George R.R. Martin might be coming to television

Game of Thrones might be coming to a close in 2018, but another world created by George R.R.R Martin could be appearing on television soon. According to Martin, Universal Cable Productions has acquired the rights to adapt his superhero series, Wild Cards.

The series contains thousands of stories from hundreds of authors

Martin created the series along with Melinda M. Snodgrass in 1987 with the anthology Wild Cards. The series is set in an alternate history which began following the outbreak of an alien virus that mutates those it infects. Survivors can be crippled or gain superhuman powers. The series spans over twenty anthologies, in which individual authors contribute short stories to a much larger narrative.

The twenty-third installment of the series, High Stakes, is due to be released later this month. Martin noted that the series is still in early stages, but that they are working to figure out what set of characters and what stories the series would focus on.The series includes thousands of individuals stories from hundreds of authors, which will provide show runners with a wealth of content for a potential series.

Martin noted that he wouldn’t be involved in the series because he has his own exclusive development deals with HBO. However, his co-creator, Melinda Snodgrass will be one of the executive producers for the show. UCP is part of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, which has produced shows such as Syfy’s Defiance, The Magicians, and Killjoys, as well as USA’s Mr. Robot and Colony.

There have been efforts to adapt the Wild Cards series in the past. In 2011, Syfy Films bought the screen rights for a film adaptation of the story. With Game of Thrones ending in the near future and with superhero stories popular at the box office, the property appears to a solid bet for Universal. The release did not provide a timeline for the production of the series.
