How technology is winning in Olympic training

Computerized gadgets are helping Olympic stars bring home the gold.

TrackMan is the latest tool track-and-field athletes are using to monitor their performance. Golfers originally used the device. This year it was adopted by the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. The computerized device tracks the trajectory of shot puts and hammers — and how high and far they go.

Phil Cheetham, U.S. Olympic Committee senior sport technologist, says knowledge is power when an athlete is training. Immediate knowledge of results improves technique more quickly than if the athlete doesn’t have feedback, he says.

World champion shot-putter Joe Kovacs says his distance has improved by more than 4 feet since he began training with the new technology.
