This lamp is illuminated by your phone's LED

Do you really need to buy a lightbulb when your phone has a powerful LED already built in? This is the question an Israeli company hopes to answer with its new product the UpLamp, which it’s describing as “the first lampless light.” Instead of relying on a bulb, the lamp directs and distributes a phone’s LED light. The company says it uses a “scattering optic” to disperse the LED light throughout UpLamp. It’s compatible with the iPhone 5 / 5S / 6 / 6S and Samsung Galaxy S5 / S6 / S7 / S7 Edge.

UpLamp comes with a companion iOS and Android app that controls users’ alarms. The lamp also responds to hand claps, which turn it on or off, as well as hand waves, which dims it. I’m not sure I want to keep my phone’s LED light powered on for extended periods of time, but the company bets people will upgrade their phone long before their LED dies out. The company’s founder also notes that the app and light turn off after 30 minutes of no movement, but still, I don’t think my phone wants to be on for hours or even half an hour.

That being said, the lamp can’t work around iOS users’ app dimming settings. The flashlight will turn off after the UpLamp app dims or falls asleep, which happens after specific user-set times.

Its Kickstarter is now live. The UpLamp comes in four color choices — yellow, blue, white, and pink — and starts at $43. It’s expected to ship in August.
